An Italian legend claims that a fisheman gave his beloved a fishing net preserved in salt; seeking her love, as it was all he could afford. His beloved fell in love with the fishing net pattern and upon trying to duplicate it with a needle and thread she created the first fine lace from cloth.
For centuries jewelers tried in vain to create "true lace" jewelry as it was impossible to reproduce the intricate threads of gold thread with existing technology. So, jewelers resorted to making either a caste or hand- punched honeycone composite to represent lace. True fabric lace is comprised of fine golden threads that are handwoven in either a traditional Italian, French or Victorian pattern, all stemming from the
Etruscans who were the first to introduce this intricate design. The majority of lace historians and enthusiasts feel that Venetian Lace from Burano is the finest form of "true lace.

In fact in the 1500's Venetian Lace was more valuable than gold and currency. Affluent women throughout the world provided their future grooms with Venetian Lace for their dowry.

The history of Venetian Lace is traced to Giovanna Dandolo, the wife of Doge Pasquale Malipiero whose passion for lace made it the most valuable commodity in the early 1400's.
